Amethyst – The February Birthstone

THE GEMSTONE:

Amethyst is the purple colored member of the large quartz family of gemstones, and is found primarily in geode form in Brazil and Uruguay.  Because royalty has always adored the color purple, amethysts abound in the ornaments of ancient Greeks, Egyptians, and in the British Crown Jewels.  It is durable and can be worn everyday.  It is also the stone of the sixth wedding anniversary.

THE LORE:

Amethyst comes from the Greek word ‘amethusto’, which means ‘not drunk’.  It is said that the wearer of amethyst will be protected from drunkenness, especially if the drinker uses an amethyst amulet. Some say it will prevent baldness, improve the complexion, and protect from treason and deceit.  Amethyst is said to repel wild beasts and magic spells.  Ask one of our sales associates for the full story of the Amethyst legend.
