Alexandrite – The June Birthstone

THE GEMSTONE:

Alexandrite was named for the Russian Czar Alexander II after the 1830 discovery of the gem in the Ural mountains.  These deposits, which yielded some of the worlds finest gemstones are now worked out.  Fine gem quality Alexandrite is very expensive – more so than diamonds.  Fortunately, a laboratory created synthetic corundum with strong color change has been available as a substitute since 1904.  Pearls are also an alternate June birthstone.  Both natural and synthetic Alexandrite have excellent hardness and toughness and can be worn everyday with normal care.  Alexandrite is the gemstone of the 55th wedding anniversary.

THE LORE:

Alexandrite is a color change type of Chrysoberyl that is said to be ‘emerald by day – ruby by night’.
